First of all, please forgive me if I posted in the wrong category.
I started working with a company that has about 25 physical server (about 5 are to be decommissioned) running server 2008. There's one server that is running MS Hyper-V 2012 with 3 VMs. I am more of a Hyper-v guy, but I run into compatibility issues here and there. For example, the backup software that this company uses allows for cloud recovery, but only for VMware environments and not Hyper-v. Also, the other issue I see a lot, and this is more of an issue for me is that most companies hiring is asking for VMware experience. I don't worry too much about it because I am a network guy and don't have to worry about it, but now I am taking on the roll of systems and network engineer.
I want to virtualize DC, DHCP, DNS, Term Serv, and a few other application servers such as SQL. The company doesn't have a SAN nor are prepared to spend the money on a SAN. Well, at least not now. Where do you recommend I begin? Is the vSphere hypervisor free edition is what I am looking for?
Please let me know if you need more info.
Thanks,
Alex
