Should it work to copy large files from one folder in the datastore to another folder in the same datastore via vSphere Client Copy & Paste commands?

Hi,

I am trying the following scenario on a ESXi 5.5:

  • I have a VM with a virtual disk of about 35GB.
  • I open the datastore browser, select the .vmdk file and select "Copy" from the context menu.
  • In the same datastore browser, I select a different folder, open the context menu and select Paste.

A copy file task is started as I would expect.

Though, I realized, that after I repeated that for 1- 2 times (with different files), the task became very very slow.

Whereas the first two files where copied in a matter of like 3-4 minutes, my current copy-task is very slow,. It's only at 30% after about 1 hour!

Is it possible, that this Copy & Paste feature is not to be used for such purpose and is filling up some internal cache that is not visible anywhere?

I checked the performance diagrams, and found CPU be near 0% (all VMs are currently off), and alos RAM at nearly 0%.

The only value I found is about latency on the Storage Adapter / Datastore and Disk diagrams...

Should this normally work and I have to consider a hardware issue?

It's a RAID 5 system, but I don't know how many physical HDs and about their health status...
